John Santoro

Painting plein air in oil is at the heart of my practice—a combination of technical assessment, and honoring the inexpressible energy of place.

John Santoro grew up in the village of Cornwall-on-Hudson, in New York’s Hudson Valley. After receiving a BA in Communications from the State University of New York in Plattsburgh he worked for a leading New York prop and display house making scenery for Broadway shows including La Cage aux Folles, Dreamgirls and Cats. In 1984, John moved to Massachusetts where he began a career as a graphic designer, illustrator and fine artist. In the late 1980s he moved to Portland, Maine where he currently lives. In 2009, John received a Masters of Fine Art in Visual Art from the Vermont College of Fine Arts in Montpelier. He paints outside, year round, predominantly in oils. His work is held in private, public and corporate collections across the country.
