Art Notes: Benjamin Lincoln's "Perseverance"

Motion and stability, all at once. That's what Benjamin Lincoln's Perseverance conveys to me.

From left to right: swirling clouds, breaking waves, whitecaps and large swells; all giving the scene a strong sense of motion.

Center: a sail and skiff and possibly even a figure struggling to hold course. There's motion in the struggle of the figure (if it is, indeed, a figure) yet also stability in the sail and skiff, including its placement in the center of the composition.

And all over: brushstrokes that are delicate, airy in some places and heavy, dense in others. Their confidence adds a sense of stability to me.

All at once, this work is in motion and yet confidently anchored.
