Artists to Watch

  • Melonie Bennett
A wholly original and arresting contemporary photographer documenting the lives of Mainers.

A featured photographer from my 2009 exhibition A Picture's Worth, Melonie's work has also recently been seen in the 2007 Portland Museum of Art exhibition Both Sides of the Camera: Photographs from the Judith Ellis Glickman Collection; in a 2006 University of Maine Museum of Art Solo Exhibition; and in a 2005 Bates College Museum of Art show New Acquisitions: Local and Global Contemporary Photography.

  • Denise Froelich

"Intuition, the familiar and the ordinary are embodied in the nature of my work," Denise explains in an artist's statement. "I grew up on a farm in Somerset county in Maine with an awareness of conservation, labor and agrarian beauty. Because of this, I am sensitive to the people and places I know intimately that are connected to the farm and its landscape. I always thought I would be a landscape painter, although I make photographs. Traditional painting themes and narratives are infused with intuition and the immediacy of the moment. A neo-pictorialist? Perhaps."
